Energy Saving Tips for Homeowners

When we think of energy efficiency here at Bright Solar Power California, we think of using less energy and paying less money for the same level of comfort in our homes. We prefer to use less and get more. Here are some tips and tricks to maximize your energy savings:

Invest in Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats can help you save on energy by simply allowing you to program the temperature in your home based on your schedule. We recommend checking with your utility company to see if they have a demand response program such as Southern California Edison’s Smart Energy Program

Replace Old Hot Water Heaters

The older your hot water heater is, the less efficient and the more energy it requires to work. Consider replacing old water heaters with a newer model and wrapping it with water heater insulation to maximize its efficiency.

Get an Energy Audit

Asking your utility company for an energy audit is an excellent way to find out what changes you can make to save the most money on your energy bill.

Use LED Light Bulbs

CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs are not near as energy efficient as LED lights. LED lights also provide consumers with more variety of options, some of which can easily mimic that of natural light. Not to mention, the price of these bulbs has significantly decreased.

Make Sure Your Windows are Sealed

Ensuring your windows have the proper sealant is one of the easiest ways to prevent air flow into and out of your house. You’d be surprised how many folks have no idea they’re windows aren’t adequately sealed. (It also wouldn’t hurt to replace any old weather stripping you have on your doors while you’re at it.)

Have Proper Insulation in Your Attic

Making sure you have suitable attic insulation is another easy way to reduce how hard your air conditioner is working during the summer.

Get an HVAC Tune-Up

If your HVAC isn’t performing at peak efficiency, you’re paying more than you should for energy. It’s best to find a reputable company to perform a tune-up of your unit one a year, preferably before summer starts.

Landscape for Some Surrounding Shade

Another way to reduce your air conditioner’s work load (especially during these hot, California desert summers, amirite?) is to plant a few South-facing and West-facing trees or shrubs. Just make sure they don’t shade too much of your solar panels.

Invest in Energy Star Appliances

Did you know our government has a certification program for high efficiency appliances? You read that right. The biggest savings will come from larger appliances like refrigerators, washers and dryers. The government program offers choices for almost every home appliance, including equipment for offices and other commercial locations.

Invest in Solar Panels for Your Home

Bet you didn’t see this one coming? It’s no surprise that we are partial to solar energy as a way to reduce your utility bill and increase your property value (see our post about how solar increases your home value HERE).
